One of the greatest pharaoh of Egypt , also known as Amenhotep the
fourth .He ruled Egypt from 1350 to 1334 BC. (18 Th. dynasty )
succeeding his father Amenhotep the third . He is characterize in the
sculptures and relieves by his abnormal feminine body .
His importance is based on the fact that he is the first one in the
history that called for a single god , Aton the sun god or solar
disk.
At the beginning of his reign , he built roofless temples to be in
direct contact with the sun , Aton . he also forbade the worship of
other gods including the powerful god ,Amon . His religion based on
the concept of monotheism did not survive because of the influence of
the priests of Amon who called him , after his death, the enemy .
He was also the husband of Nefertiti , the beautiful princess and his
beauty is still seen in her famous painted limestone bust which is
one of the great works of art surviving from ancient Egypt and is now
in the Staatliche Museum in Berlin . Nefertiti was the mother of his
6 daughters and several sons .
After he established his new religion, he changed his name from
Amonhotep the fourth to Akhenaton, meaning the horizon to Aton .About
1365 BC.,he moved the capital of Egypt from Thebes to a new location
,now present at Tell el Amarna near Menya south of Egypt , and
called it Akhetaton , the city of Aton .
His preoccupation with matters of mind and spirit led to neglect of
the Egyptian empire , and his reign marked the beginning of Egypt's
decline .
He ordered to obliterate all traces of Amon religion but after his
death , his son in low Tutankhamon returned to the religion of Amon
and return the capital of Egypt to Thebes .
